Ok, so I used to be a huge Taco Bueno fan. I've been frequenting the one on Judge Ely literally since the beginning. You know, back when it had the arcade? Back then, the bean and cheese nachos with tons on jalapeños was all a growing boy needed. The queso was awesome! Lately though, eh, just not the same. Maybe when they took the lard out of the retried beans? It just not as good as it was. I have been having a hard time finding good, fast TexMex here in Abilene.
Taco Casa has been opened in Abilene for years, now. 's a little tucked It's away and I always forgot about it. I finally took the family here instead of Rosas on Taco Tuesday. Oh boy, did I find what I've been missing. The menu is old-school and I loved it. They have a Chillada that tastes exactly like the old Taco Bell Enchirito. You know, back when Bell actually cooked instead of microwaved. Remember how good their old red sauce was? I swear Taco Casa's tastes exactly the same! It was like nostalgia in my mouth. The tacos and burritos were really good. Plus, the make Taco Burgers as good as the old Bueno Burgers! I'm going to try the Taco Salad next time. It looked awesome, too.
So, if you want to have dinner in Abilene circa 1983, give it a shot. Just a heads up, though. They make everything to order so expect to wait a few for your order. Trust me, it's totally worth it. Not convinced? The smell that hits you as soon as you walk in will be all the convincing necessary. You'll thank me, later! -

Still my absolute favorite fast food Tex Mex! No one in Abilene can touch their quality or their quantity. Never a half empty taco shell. They fill them full. Never a sliver of beans the size of your pinky finger on a burrito. Their big, fat, and juicy. Spicy for me please! AND, they do taco Tuesday and Thursday. They love us. See you there!

Always a great spot to get a quick taco. I grew up with a Taco Casa by my home town and the food has consistently stayed the same with more than reasonable prices. Its always fresh, hot, plenty of meat and a bonus with friendly service. Oh and a military discount is a great thing they offer. I recommend the Tacos with meat and cheese only and add the hot sauce. Its fast food but the good kind:).

Taco Casa is a locally owned chain restaurant that is definitely proud of their Texas heritage. They have the usual "Mexican" fast food fare.
Atmosphere: It is basically your typical fast food drive-thru restaurant. Inside is very reminiscent of the seating at the other Texas-proud fast food chain; Whataburger, but in a different color scheme. Bright and colorful and the condiments area is usually very well kept. The tables often need a self-cleaning, especially during busy lunch hours. Another quirk is that they play contemporary Christian music throughout the restaurant. Kudos to them for that. 1 Star
Service: I have read reviews stating that an employee was rude and that the service was slow. Apparently these are people who have visited one single time and happened to find the one employee who was having a bad day. I have been here more times than I can count on all of my extremities. I have found nothing but extremely courteous people and a line that moves rather promptly. I dare you to try and compare the service at Taco Casa to any Taco Bell in town. Go ahead, I'll wait......... 2 Stars
Food: This is where Taco Casa stands heads and tails above the other fast food "Mexican" places. Come on, let's be realistic, none of these are true Mexican cuisine, but they sure do garner a following. Don't get me wrong, I like all of the them for different reasons, but Casa just gives u "more." For example, I love cheese. I would ride a Gouda boat down a ricotta-falls only to drown in a river of cheddar. Casa is the place for me. They heap that cheddar on baby! Along with half a head of lettuce. Yes! I hear the nachos are one of the best things on the menu. I haven't had them. Why? Because there is a thing on their menu that was stolen straight from Taco Bell's 1980's menu. For them it was called the Enchirito. Casa has called it the Chilada. It is a beef and been burrito, with the enchilada sauce smothering the outside and then it has a block of ooey-gooey cheddar cheese melted on top along with some sliced black olives to act as life saver rings for the stray sauce that tends to find its way to the bottom of the container. It is marvelous. Of course the tacos, burritos, and tostadas are also wonderful, but gimme that Chilada, in spades, please! 2 Stars
So why would I give a fast food joint a 5 star rating? Am I comparing Taco Casa to a meal at Hugo's? Absolutely not. But if I am comparing them to other fast food joints then yes, it is a 5 star for me.
------------------------
My rating system:
Up to 1 star for atmosphere (Let's face it, I could eat Franklin BBQ on a dirty napkin while sitting in the bed of my truck.)
Up to 2 stars apiece for both food and service (these are the two things that will either drive me away or reel me back in)
1 Star-Wouldn't let my dog eat here
2 Star-Below average-usually something really struck me as being bad and I doubt I would ever return.
3 Star-Average-Might come back. Might not if there are better options.
4 Star-Above average-will definitely come back and try something new. Probably had great service as well.
5 Star-Phenomenal-Will definitely return for such an amazing experience. -

We love the simple bean burritos and the friendly service. The tortillas are always fresh. Here lately their regular tacos are not always crispy. When we complained on our next trip through the drive through, they gave us replacements plus extras at no cost. Unfortunately, those shells were also tough.. must have been from the same batch. Anyway, they still deserve a 5-Star review.
P.S. Be sure and ask for packets of 'fire' sauce instead of hot sauce......
(it makes the boss crazy...LOL)
